We should all be concerned: the ebola epidemic is dangerous and real, putting our fragile existence at risk.
Band Aid is raising money to help eradicate the virus in Africa, but we should ask ourselves if Geldof’s efforts could be causing long term damage to the continent.
How can Africa woo foreign investment if dishonest stunts like these portray the area with such negativity?
As Fuse ODG explains, the lyrics do not portray the situation nor the mindset of those living there.
Lyrics include: “There is no peace and joy in west Africa this Christmas”, “Where a kiss of love can kill you and there’s death in every tear”
The repeated reinforcement of what Africa is supposedly like, can only serve to perpetuate the continent’s real problems. This will lead to yet another one-off handout from the West using the same message to further damn this area of the world, forbidding Africa from fulfilling its true potential, thus fuelling the cycle.
As a result, Dave In Charge has chosen to exclude himself from any future collaboration with Band Aid until these concerns are taken seriously by the organisers.

Africa needs our help – it needs your help. With your inaction you are thrusting the ‘proverbial’ knife into the ‘backs’ of the ‘ENTIRE PROVERBIAL ARTISTIC COMMUNITY’. I take pride in weeping for justice every day, but all you can do is make bland, generic, mass produced filth. You can either line your pockets, follow the crowd, be a puppet of the music elite, or you can stand up for Africa. Please be the voice of Africa, because it can’t stand up for itself
